Smiley®, the happiest brand ever, was born in 1971 when journalist Franklin Loufrani hatched a plan to make French newspaper readers happier: he highlighted all good news stories with a Smiley® logo so they would think positive thoughts. Smiley® quickly spread around the world, crossing political, social and economic boundaries and became the most recognizable icon in the world.
